Elgin Golf Club was formed in 1906 and started as a 9-flOle course. The course was ready for play on 8 May 1907 but by 1923/24 the game has become so popular that the course was extended to an 18 hole facility.
Elgin is a testing healthland course measuring 6401 yards with a par of 69 and a standard scratch of 71, fully justifying its claim to be one of the finest inland courses in northern part of Scotland. This course, a test to low and
high handicap players alike, is always kept in immaculate condition and while playing one's round, there is always the added beauty of the panoramic views - looking north over the city of Elgin, and to the south, the hills stretching to the distant Cairngorm Mountains.
The course is recognised as an excellent test of golf, at 6449 yard it is not the longest by modern standards but with eight par 4's at over 400 yards it will test even the mighty. There is only one par 5, the 5th hole "Hardhillock", which the Club is sometimes known as locally. Indeed, this has to rank as one of the hardest courses in the land to break par.
"Elgin was the finest inland course in the North of Scotland" - Peter AIIiss
